Tamil National Alliance has appealed to the international community to take meaningful steps stressing the right to self determination of the Tamil people. In its report, TNA states that President Rajapajse, Head of Lankan state, is to address the 67th session of the UN organization.
“Tamils are struggling for their right to self-determination in their traditional homeland in the north east of Sri Lanka. The Tamil people of Sri Lanka have democratically demonstrated and given a mandate for the right to self determination in every election since 1956. There had been non violent struggles”, the report stated.
TNA further stated that the Sri Lankan government denied the Tamil people their right to self determination by the passage of the constitutions of 1972 and 1978. A unitary state was created without the consent of the Tamil people. There had been several programs that were discriminatory in nature under taken by every government. All efforts taken by the Tamil leadership for three decades to win the rights of the Tamil people through democratic struggles miserably failed.
TNA stated that it was in this context, that a violent struggle was launched. To day, the LTTE is pursuing the struggle for the right to self determination of the Tamil people.
TNA added that since Rajapakse became President the violence unleashed on the Tamils has increased. The military operations of the Sri Lanka government are a blatant violation of the Ceasefire Agreement signed between the Sri Lankan Government and the LTTE in 2002.
TNA went on that the Sri Lankan government talks of a political solution but the All Party Representative Committee appointed by the government to put forward a proposal has not arrived at a consensus although 18 months have rolled by.
TNA concluded that the Sri Lankan government is determined for a military solution. It will not comply with any international procedures or standard.
