Sri Lanka: Jaffna University Students vow to agitate over death threats

Meanwhile, the Vice Chancellor of the University has also pleaded for the creation of conducive environment for educational activities. Speaking to Tamilnet website on Saturday conditions of anonymity, the university student union said that unless immediate measures are taken to stop the death threats immediately, they will be forced to agitate.
The student’s declaration comes in the aftermath of the appearance of death threats with hit lists of selected student leaders and faculty deans posted on the University walls on Friday night. The pamphlets have caused fear and anxiety among the students and severely disrupted the educational activities of the university.
The Student Union representatives also accused the Sri Lankan law enforcement agencies of disinterest in bringing the perpetrators who had forcibly entered the campus and assaulted persons including the security guard, to justice. Citing the previous incidents of targeted killings of student leaders the Student Union representatives, called on the authorities to take immediate steps to identify and punish those responsible for the threat posters. They said that they will not vacillate to protest in the absence of immediate measures as demanded.
