TNA Parliamentarian S.Chandrakanthan, has stated that the recruitment of Tamil youths in the east for the service in the police force can lead to communal discord, disharmony and racial violence.
In a statement, Chandrakanthan states that the government, which is interested in the military operation, has taken measures to recruit Tamil youths to the police service in the east under the disguise of a development program for the east. This can drive a wedge between the Tamil and Muslim communities, who live in peace in the east.

| It certainly looks that way. We are not against recruiting youth for the Police in the east. One can imagine what is in the pipeline. Is it a sort of sudden liking towards the youth of the east? I smell a rat.I recall nostalgically the manner in which police officers were recruited way back in 1960s. When an application is made (even for a post of a constable) providing all the required information and credentials, a very extensive investigation is carried out on the applicants as well as relatives' background to ensure that there is no criminal record of any sort. Even if a paternal or maternal uncle of the applicant was fined as low as five rupees in a court of law the application is rejected. It now seems that criminal record is a pre-requisite to be recruited. Set a thief to catch a thief? Des not work that way! It is more like giving license to kill. No offense intended for those good police officers in service. There are quite a few I know of actually. But they are becoming an endangered species because of the modus opernadi of recruitment. The 'walk-in with your baggage' interview and recruitment procedure is one of the reasons for current undoing of the law enforcement system. But then who cares.... |
