The Thamil Makkal Viduthalai Pullikal has appointed a three-member committee to probe allegations of financial mismanagement within the party and a senior cadre had been questioned in this regard, a top TMVP official revealed. The committee, comprising Jeyam, Markan and former party spokesman Thuyavan, is probing the misuse of TMVP funds amounting to more than eight million rupees, the official said.

“We have reason to believe that some TMVP officials diverted funds meant for the organization to their personal accounts. We are also probing allegations of funds being misused by Karuna Amman. A report will be issued once the probe is completed,” he said.

On Sunday the committee questioned one-time TMVP treasurer Sinnathamby to find out how funds were diverted to Karuna’s personal accounts in London where his family is reportedly residing. Karuna Amman -- who headed the faction which broke away from the LTTE -- fled the country recently and is in London.

An internal rift within the TMVP came after allegations of funds being diverted to Karuna’s personal accounts resulting in his former commander Pillayan and cadres loyal to him deciding to ditch Karuna.

Pillayan is now said to be in control of Karuna’a one-time stronghold Batticaloa and was expected to wrest the party leadership from Karuna.
