Five teachers unions in Sri Lanka will register their protest against unfair treatment and discrimination on October 6 (Saturday), the day is observed as World Teachers Day. According to organisers, through observing this programme they want to show the world that how teachers are being victims of discrimination in the island country.
The leaders of unions said they will carry black flags in front of government schools on Friday to ask the Sri Lankan government to treat them fairly.
Ceylon Teaches Union president Joseph Stalin said: “It is meaningless to celebrate the teachers day when our rights are suppressed.”
He said teachers are protesting recently only to remove the discrimination in salary structure of the teachers in Sri Lanka.
As a token protest the teachers postponed marking the exams of the G.C.E last month but their problems are yet to be solved by the government.
Stalin said due to their protest on Friday and Saturday the regular academic activities in the educational institutions will not be hampered.
He said through this protests they want to show the Sri Lankan government that they have genuine demands and those should be met.
