Visiting UN Special Rapporteur on torture, Manfred Nowak, visited the Welikada Prison on Tuesday to see the conditions of inmates for himself where he held talks with them, prison officials said. When contacted, Commissioner General of Prisons Major General Vajira Wijegunawardane confirmed the visit of the UN envoy.
He said Mr. Nowak visited the entire prison premises and inspected the condition of the prison as well.
However, it was earlier reported that during his eight day stay in Sri Lanka the UN envoy would visit a number of prisons in the country and meet inmates in each prison.
“We are ready to facilitate Mr. Nowak’s visit to any prison in the country whenever he will want to go to meet the inmates there,” Retired Major General Wijegunwardane said.
Mr. Nowak is expected to submit a report to the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) after his eight-day visit to Sri Lanka.
