Internet hackers on the payroll of the Government of Sri Lanka (GoSL) had today (Saturday, 06 October 2007) successfully brought down a popular Tamil language news website www.puthinam.com. However, the site is still accessible via the address www.eelampage.com.
The attack is the first such reported incidence of cyber terrorism, designed to quell public descent against an oppressive regime such as that of the Rajapaksa brothers in Sri Lanka. Net experts say that the hackers had only managed to disable the domain name and not the servers on which the site is hosted. In June this year senior government Ministers publicly declared that they were actively seeking to bring down pro Tamil websites. The English language www.tamilnet.com website was blocked in Sri Lanka by the government earlier in the year. Due to continuing threats from the Government of Sri Lanka and allied paramilitary groups, Tamil websites have to operate from multiple servers using numerous identities and proxies. During 2007 alone over a dozen Tamil media personal have been killed by the Sri Lankan military. Set as favorite Bookmark Comments (1)
