Sri Lanka: Main suspect in businessmen abduction cases flees to India

Sri Lankan Criminal Investigations Department (CID) is suspecting the main culprit involved in the crimes like abductions of businessmen for ransom has fled to India on Sunday. The CID officials said the main culprit who has been wanted in the island country for long fled to India on a forged passport evading the police.

Sources said the CID has sought the assistance of Interpol to trace and bring him back to the country.

The investigations conducted by CID DIG D.W. Prathapasinghe revealed that the suspect has collected a big amount of money from another businessman in the Kandy district.

The CID officials said they have recovered two motor cars, two vans, one lorry, two three wheelers, four hand phones and a fax machine from the suspects.

A special team of the CID made a major breakthrough in their investigations into the multi-million rupee extortion racket targeting Tamil and Muslim businessmen when they took 14 suspects including two policemen and a sergeant of the Air Force into custody and interrogated them.

CID officials have got some important information with regard to abduction of businessmen and collecting ransom from them.

The special CID squad is also conducting investigations to ascertain whether there were other airmen involved in the extortion racket.
