According to reports the Sri Lankan government is proposing to increase its defence spending by 20 per cent next year. This move comes as the sky rocketing cost of living already taking its toll on the country’s population.

According to the initial budget estimates placed before the Sri Lankan parliament, Defence spending would rise to 166.4 billion rupees during 2008 from an estimated 139.4 billion rupees in 2007.

Observers say that the proposed increase of defence spending is indicative of the Sri Lankan government’s plan to carry out massive military actions in the Tamil Homeland in the year 2008. The Sri Lankan government is expected to present its "Appropriation Bill" to the Parliament on October 10.
