The Sri Lankan government will send a high-powered committee to the Jaffna peninsula next week to carry out a study on three major crimes--killings, abductions and disappearances of Tamil civilians there.
With the deterioration of law and order in the peninsula over the last six months, these crimes have become regular occurrences and, on an average, three civilians are being killed daily there.
Minister of Engineering Services Dr. Rajitha Senaratne at a press briefing on Tuesday said, the committee named the Presidential Committee to Monitor, Abductions, Disappearances and Human Rights Violations, has received hundreds of complaints relating to atrocities against Tamil civilians since its inception on June 1.
The team would comprise Dr. Senaratne, Transport Minister Dallas Alahapperuma, Vocational Training Deputy Minister G. Radhakrishnan and Presidential Advisor Vasudeva Nanayakkara.
Holding the LTTE responsible for these killings and abductions, Senaratne said they have learnt from different reliable sources that the LTTE cadres are killing those whom they are suspecting to be involved in the activities against them, leaking information to the security forces and surrendering to government forces.
Dr. Senaratne said international human rights organizations like Human Rights Council and Human Rights Watch are accusing the Government of human rights violations, abductions and disappearances but no one is referring to disappearances of more than 10,000 in Kashmir and killings of nearly 600,000 in Iraq.
“Only 1,200 cases in connection with abductions or disappearances have been recorded in Sri Lanka. But it has become the cynosure of international communities”, he said, adding, "Killings and other rights violations are common in war torn countries. The Government would not allow any international bodies to investigate human rights violation in Sri Lanka but it will appoint its own commissions to investigate these complaints”.
