Welikoda prison houses hundreds of civilians from north, east and from Colombo accusing all these people are members of the rebels, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam for many months without any trail under the draconian emergency measures Sri Lanka has it the country for very many years.
About 114 accused in the Welikoda prison embarked on one day symbolic hunger strike today to get the attention and demand a meeting from the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour currently in Sri Lanka to asses the human right situation in the country.
Many accused were attacked today by the Sinhalese inmates and verbally abused them for participating in the hunger strike in the prison. The prison wardens are also involved in the attacks against the Tamil prisoners there and warned them if they continue to take part in the hunger strike they will have to face sever consequences.
Tamil prisoner wanted to use the opportunity of the high profile visit to the country by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour to demand justice for them for their sufferings in the poor prisons in Sri Lanka.
The number of civilians seeking protection with the Sri Lankan Human Rights Commission (HRC) in Jaffna fearing for their lives and safety in September alone increased to staggering 72 civilians, including 4 families with their children, while 24 civilians had been reported missing at the HRC.
At least 5,472 people killed, over 1000 people abducted and over thousands disappeared including hundreds of children in the enforced violence. There is no sign of let up in state enforced rights abuses in Sri Lanka as section of the citizens in the north and east of Sri Lanka are in quandary many rights groups said. The Sri Lankan government said the rights abuses against Sri Lanka were baseless and a violation of the country's sovereignty.
