Aided paramilitary operatives in the region. The lawyers have boycotted the court hearings at the Point Pedro divisional court. The lawyers in Point Pedro have held a token protest against the unbearable levels of death threats, intimidations and extortions by the Sri Lankan military backed paramilitary operatives in the peninsula.
The protesting lawyers have demanded that the Sri Lankan government should give them security guarantees for them to work in a secure environment free from the paramilitary menace. Similar protests were held by Jaffna lawyers in September which were then suspended upon the assurances given by the Jaffna SLA commander.
Speaking to media a Vadamradchchi Lawyers Association member said that the Sri Lankan military has failed to fulfil its promises so far. Meanwhile, the Lawyers Associations of Chaavakacheari, Mallakam, Jaffna and Kayts judicial divisions have also announced that they will also start boycott in support of the Point Pedro Lawyers.
A media report quoted an attorney-at-law who wishes to remain anonymous that many attorneys-at-law in Point Pedro, including leading lawyers, are being continually threatened with death, intimidation through phone calls by the Sri Lankan military backed paramilitary men. The protesters said, that their boycott will continue until they are allowed to undertake their duties without any harassments or threats.
