Sri Lanka: 2nd Lt. Malathy’s 20th anniversary and Tamil Eelam Women’s Day celebration in Vanni

October 10th, the day LTTE’s first woman fighter Malathy died in 1987 has been observed as Tamil Eelam woman’s day. The twentieth annual commemoration of the death of Martyr 2nd Lt. Malathy and the Tamil Eelam Women’s day celebrations were observed through out Vanni. The LTTE women’s wing has organized the events. To mark the event, the roads and important places have been decorated with yellow and red flags and with banners depicting Malathy. Public meetings and events have been conducted thorough out Vanni. Malathy died during the first day of fighting with the Indian forces on 10 October 1987 at Kopay in Jaffna.
