Colombo - A senior Lecturer of the Science Faculty of Jaffna University, Ponniah Mahinan, 62 reported as missing since last Saturday found dead and his decomposed body was identified by his wife in Colombo on Tuesday. Relatives of Mr.Ponniah Mahinan were reported at Wellawattala police station on last Saturday as the family lost telephone contact with the lecturer, Police said. On Sunday, the relatives in Colombo were asked to identify a decomposed dead body with scratch wounds at the National Hospital in Colombo.
The body, recovered from Bambalapitiya coast, was identified Tuesday evening by the lecturer's wife who came from Jaffna. The lecturer from Kokkuvil East, Jaffna, leaves behind his wife and two daughters.
Vice Chancellor, Prof S Raveendranath of Eastern University had been abducted in Colombo on December 15th, 2006 and his whereabouts still unknown even after one year.
Many including his loved ones are extremely concerned and fearful for the safety of Vice Chancellor, Prof S Raveendranath. He was intimidated in the Eastern University and threatens with deaths many times before his abduction.
Many other observers and NGOs including ICJ, IIGEP, ACF, AI, HRW, AHRC, ICRC, UNHRC, are being highly skeptical any improvements in the rights situations in Sri Lanka amid the very high profile visits by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour.
At least 5,472 people killed, over 1000 people abducted and over thousands disappeared including hundreds of children in the enforced violence. There is no sign of let up in state enforced rights abuses in Sri Lanka as section of the citizens in the north and east of Sri Lanka are in quandary many rights groups said. The Sri Lankan government said the rights abuses against Sri Lanka were baseless and a violation of the country's sovereignty.
