In a statement issued on Wednesday the student union said that they strongly condemn the brutal killing of the lecturer which comes at a time when the Jaffna University is facing severe difficulties. The Student Union release condemned the killing of their University lecturer Ponnaiah Mahinan in Colombo saying that the killing has affected not only the students but also the wider Tamil society.
The lecturer’s killing at a time when the Jaffna University is facing immense difficulties in catering the student’s needs is beyond all civilised norms and rights, the release said.
“We condemn the brutal and unjustifiable killing in the strongest possible terms” it added. The Union also called on the international community and the relevant authorities to carry out justice to such killings.
The lecturer Ponniah Mahinan who was attached to the Science Faculty of Jaffna University was reported missing since Saturday evening in Colombo. Later it emerged that the lecturer was abducted and killed by unidentified men. His body was found on Sunday with scratch injuries. Later it was identified by his wife on Tuesday.
Lecturer Mahinan was in Colombo to supervise paper corrections of GCE Advanced Level examinations at the end of September and was staying at a lodge on Daya Road in Wellawatte when he was abducted.
