Saturday, 13 October 2007
UN Human Rights Commissioner Louise Arbour who came to Sri Lanka to inspect the security situation in north-east and to look into the human rights violations has been made desperate by the government. Security forces did not allow the UN Commissioner to meet the Jaffna citizens today (12) and to listen to their woes. Around 2000 people were gathered near the UNHCR office in Templer Road, Jaffna since 7 AM to meet her but they were chased away when she arrived there.

Around 500 people gathered at Nallur temple to meet Ms. Arbour but they were also not allowed to meet her.

Meanwhile, 86 Tamil detainees in Colombo Remand Prison who have been there for two, three years without framing charges have launched a fast since three days asking for a meeting with the UN human Rights Commissioner. They say that they are produced in court every fortnight and re-remanded saying that Attorney General's instructions have not been received. They say that the majority of them do not know the charges against them.
