The United States will only continue to support Sri Lanka's war on Tamils, if the Sri Lankan military can clearly demonstrate to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) that Tamil aspirations can never be won, according to a statement released by the country's embassy in Colombo.
The statement relating to a speech delivered by Ambassador Blake's to the American Chamber of Commerce Lunch on October 9 at the Cinnamon Grand in Colombo states: "The United States has been a strong and unwavering supporter of Sri Lanka's fight."
The statement goes on to elaborate "That support takes many forms from military, to law enforcement cooperation, to efforts to help Sri Lanka stop financial flows to the LTTE, to our contributions to enhancing the security of the Colombo Port through the Container Security Initiative of the US Department of Homeland Security and the Megaports Initiative of the Department of Energy."
The ambassador went on to praise Sri Lankan military offensives in the East, contrary to the Cease Fire Agreement (CFA) which is apparently sponsored by the Co-Chairs inclusive of the United States.
Amid the high handed rhetoric analysts however noted a key sentence "U.S. support for Sri Lanka should demonstrate to the LTTE that they cannot hope to win this conflict?.
Analysts say that this is the first real indication that if Sri Lanka's Three Year Plan to wipe out the LTTE is to fail, US may withdraw its support for military actions.
South Asian Defense experts say that the US is frustrated with the slow pace of part two of Sri Lanka's three part plan. They say that stiff resistance by LTTE cadres on the western front in Vanni is causing a major headache for the Sri Lankan government and its western backers.
