It is learned that Karuna has taken up residence in Hertfordshire, England, The Sunday Leader learns. It is learned Karuna's departure from Sri Lanka was facilitated by the government following pressure by EPDP Leader, Social Services Minister Douglas Devananda.
Informed sources said Karuna was taken under special escort to the airport with his departure arrangements handled by Deputy Airport Chief Shalitha Wijesundera. The Sunday Leader also learns the Karuna Group has acquired two houses in England, one of which is in Hertfordshire and now occupied by Karuna. The other house, it is learned is in East London.
The Karuna Group is suspected to be responsible for the abduction of Prof. S Raveendranath, the vice chancellor of the Eastern University last November, the missing academic's family said in a letter to UN Human Rights Commissioner Louise Arbour last week. "We are suspecting that he was abducted by Karuna Group (para military) on 15/12/2006 after attending a Science Forum (in Colombo)," the family said in a letter that was handed over to Arbour at the UN compound on October 11.
The letter was originally sent to the UN Human Rights Commission last month during the sixth sessions.
