Sri Lanka's military says six soldiers have been killed and two are missing after Tamil Tiger rebels attacked an army outpost in the south east. Another lost his life when a tractor driven by soliders hit a landmine while going to collect the casualties.
Much of the fighting in Sri Lanka is usually confined to the north where the rebels control a swathe of territory.
There are no reports that there were any rebel casualties in the latest outbreak of fighting. The battle took place near the Yala wildlife sanctuary on Sri Lanka's south east coast. Military spokesman 'Brigadier' Udaya Nanayakkara said an army outpost manned by nine soldiers was overrun by Tamil Tiger rebels.
'Brigadier' Nanayakkara said six were killed and one was wounded. Two more are missing.
Hours later, an army tractor sent to collect the casualties hit a landmine and another soldier was killed and three more were wounded.
