Challenging the Sri Lankan police crackdown, fifteen new underworld gangs sprung up in Colombo city according to a Colombo media news report. According to reports quoting Colombo police, fifteen new underworld gangs are said to be operating in the Colombo city limits.
The reports also said that the “gangs fairly new and had emerged despite police crackdown on underworld operations in the city after former gang leaders were shot dead either by the police or fellow gang leaders” Commenting on this a political observer said that the increase of under world gangs in Colombo and in Sri Lanka as a whole is a by product of increased number of unruly minsters in the Sri Lankan government who use the underworld gangs to do their dirty jobs. “The police are fighting a loosing battle” he added.

| Has anybody noticed that there is an emerging pattern of apprehending criminals and dealing with them? Truth is sometimes stranger than fiction. Lot of people may like the way criminals are being rid of, but this could be a dangerous thing in the future - some section playing the judge, the jury and the executioner. |
