The Sri Lankan Supreme Court Chief Justice Sarath N De Silva has ordered the Jaffna government agent to relocate the asylum seekers from the Jaffna prison to the upstairs of the Jaffna High Court building in Kurunagar. The move comes as the persons in the protective custody of Jaffna prison are demanding a better accommodation. According to reports quoting legal sources in Jaffna Sri Lankan chief Justice Sarath Nanda de Silva issued special order on Tuesday to the Jaffna Government Agent to move more than one hundred civilians who are in the protective custody of the Jaffna prison to the upstairs of High courts building in Kurunagar.

Many asylum seekers in the Jaffna prison have been complaining about ill treatment inside the prison and the dismal conditions in the chambers.

Civil rights groups in Jaffna peninsula had been agitating that welfare centres should be opened to accommodate these asylum seekers.
