The Colombo District Court on Wednesday issued notice on UNP leader Ranil Wickremasinghe asking him to produce the additional agreement signed between United National (UNP) and Sri Lanka Freedom Party (M), which was not disclosed to the public.
The court issued the notice in connection with a motion filed by two plaintiffs, former Deputy Defence Minister Anura Bastian and UNP Western Provincial Councillor, Anil Kumar Wijesinghe, filed an additional motion informing the court that there was another agreement signed between Ranil Wickremasinghe and SLFP (M) convenor Mangala Samaraweera and its contains were not made public.
They requested the court to issue an order on Mr. Wickremasinghe to forward the said agreement before court as it was needed for the main case that challenged the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between United National (UNP) and Sri Lanka Freedom Party (M).
Subsequently Colombo District judge Sisira Ratnayake issued notice on the UNP leader to show cause as to why the said documents should not be produced before court.
In their petition the two plaintiffs also stated that the agreement entered between party leader Ranil Wickremasinghe and Mangala Samaraweera on July 19, 2007 was in violation of the UNP’s constitution.
They stated that according to party constitution, the decision relating to party policies and principles should be taken only by the party convention and the National Executive Committee and therefore the UNP leader had no authority to take unilateral decisions on party policies.
The two plaintiffs requested the District Court to issue an order to quash the MOU signed between the two parties. The case was fixed for October 24.
