Catholic Bishop Thomas Soundaranayagam and Hindu Nallai Adhinam Somasundara Paramachchariya Swamy urged the Sri Lankan Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva to take pragmatic steps for bringing an end to the sufferings of people in Jaffna peninsula.
They made this appeal when Silva visited peninsula on Wednesday to declare open the judicial court complex. They told the Chief Justice that the people in the peninsula are suffering from utter insecurity as all kinds of crimes such as killing, kidnapping, torture, rape and burglary have marked a sharp rise in the peninsula. They said that the people in the peninsula cannot even walk in the streets in broad daylight. After hearing their plights, Mr. Silva assured them of discussing the matter with the concerned parties in Colombo to take immediate actions. The Sri Lankan armed forces are controlling the peninsula and some thugs belonging to paramilitary groups are committing these crimes with the help of members of the armed forces, local people alleged.
