Tamil National Alliance (TNA) has criticised the remarks of Sri Lanka Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva that he made on Wednesday (Oct 24) in Jaffna while opening the new court complex. Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva condemned the previous statement of Tamil National Alliance (TNA) that the international community should impose economic embargo against Sri Lanka unless Sri Lanka respects human rights issues.
Following the remarks by Silva, the TNA parliamentarian Sri Kantha slammed him saying, “We’re ready to face any consequences if we talk human rights of Tamils.”
In that programme Mr. Silva said Japan provides 41 per cent and Asian Development Bank is offering big amount next to Japan as international aid to Sri Lanka. The U.S and other western countries provide much smaller aid compared to Japan and ADB but these western imperialists visit Sri Lanka to suppress and control Sri Lankans.
He said they also impose new orders and they come with sticks to teach Sri Lankans that how to live but some Sri Lankans (traitors) embrace them on their foots and they ask them to use the sticks to warn the Sri Lankans; if not, they ask the westerners to impose economic embargo. These some Sri Lankans are traitors, the Chief Justice said.
Referring to the remarks of Silva, Sri Kantha said Sri Lankan government is unleashing a reign of terror against Tamils.
He said crimes like killing, torturing, raping, kidnapping and looting of Tamils properties have become regular affairs in the island country. Sri Lanka is also killing Tamil people in the middle of the sea when they try to flee to India.
”Thousands of people have been killed within the last few years. Hundreds of Tamils have been disappeared and Tamil students are often being harassed and abducted. Uncountable number of women have been raped while properties of Tamils are looted in broad daylight.
”All these are taking place in Sri Lankan army controlled areas”, the TNA MP said, holding Sri Lankan security forces and the paramilitary groups responsible for these incidents.
He said thousands of displaced people in Sampoor are not being allowed to go back to their homes by the armed forces and tens of thousands of Tamil-speaking Hindus, Muslims, and Christians have been driven out by the armed forces in the east and in Mannar.
Sri Kantha said the thugs in Jaffna publicly collect ransom even from lawyers and they kidnap the people at nights when the curfew is in effect. These are taking place not in the North and East only but also in Colombo frequently. “Although parliamentarians raised voice and concern against the human rights abuses, the Sri Lankan government has so far turned a deaf ear on our concerns”, he added.
He said the Sri Lankan government is spreading false propaganda against Tamils in one hand, and on the other, it is grossly violating human rights of Tamils.
”As long as the international community will keep on providing weapons and financial support to Sri Lanka, the government be it of UNP or SLFP will continue war against Tamils in the guise of fighting terrorism”, the TNA MP said.
He said although pressure from international community is mounting on the government to resume the peace talks with the LTTE, the government is keen on war.
The TNA parliamentarian said Sri Lankan government has extended warm hands to the international community to get aid. When some countries are raising their concerns over rights abuse in Sri Lanka, the government is not respecting their concerns.
”Only if there was any economic embargo the Sri Lankan government will be compelled to embrace peace. That’s why we urged the European Union to consider it. But the Chief Justice has taken it otherwise with the remarks that who urge the westerners are traitors. We are very surprised by the statement of Sri Lankan Chief Justice,” Sri Kantha said.
