Indian new army chief Lt. Gen. Deepak Kapoor said India has provided war materials including air defence guns to Sri Lanka to fight against the Tamil Tigers and to protect the air force bases from the further attack of the LTTE.
He also said that the Indian armed forces are imparting training to their Sri Lankan counterparts in India. He, however, did not mention that how many personnel of Sri Lankan armed forces are taking part in the training in India and he also did not disclose as when was the air defence guns and other war materials were sent to Sri Lanka. It is important to note that the statement of Kapoor comes after five days of the successful attack on Anuradhapura air base of Sri Lanka by the LTTE. Indian central government is a coalition government comprising southern Indian state political parties. These southern Indian political parties urge central government not to offer any military aid to Sri Lanka because it will be used to kill Tamils in the island country. Indian government completely ignored the request of southern Indian political parties by turning a dead ear to their concern. It is yet to be known whether the southern Indian political parties especially Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) led by Muththuvel Karunanidhi will at least speak out about the military deals between Sri Lanka and India, political analysts said.
