Former Diyawadana Nilame of the Dalada Maligawa in Kandy, Neranjan Wijeratne, brother of Enterprise Development Minister Mano Wijeratne, has tendered an apology to authorities of The Sunday Leader and its journalist Arthur Wamanan for his brother's actions.
Neranjan told The Sunday Leader that the Wijeratne family was never engaged in such activities and dismissed his brother's claim that journalist Wamanan demanded Rs. 5 million as bribe to hold back a story involving Rs. 80,000.
Neranjan termed it as “More than a joke”.
Questioning the justification of his brother’s going to police for a matter involving his wife Neranjan said, “Are journalists so mad to demand bribe of Rs. 5 million to hold back a story involving a payment of Rs. 80,000? It is nothing but a joke," he said.
He also said that their family has a history of representing in Parliament for the last three generations and never had been party to such incident like this.
"All of us are very saddened by Mano Wijeratne's actions," Neranjan observed.
He said Mano has defected from the UNP by betraying his voters just a week after their father's demise only because of his wife's persuasion.
