Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) is strengthening its position in Vealanai in the islets of Jaffna by mobilizing additional soldiers there for the past three days, sources in Jaffna said. Local people said soldiers are arriving in Kayts from Mannar in SLN ships and from Colombo to Palaali by air and being transported to Vealanai.
Sources said security has also been tightened along the main road from Jaffna town to Vealanai.
The mobilization of additional soldiers has caused fear among civilians in islets that SLN may launch offensive towards Pooneryn.
Islet residents said air surveillance over the area by Sri Lankan Air Force has also been intensified over the last three days.
