The UN Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions Philip Alston has said the overall situation including human rights in Sri Lanka is worsening fast. He has called on the UN General Assembly (GA) and the Human Rights Council to act on the island country without any delay.

In his report to the UN General Assembly Committee on social, humanitarian and cultural Alston said he believed that establishment of an international human rights monitoring body by the United Nations would significantly reduce the number of human rights abuses in that country.
