Sri Lanka: Sri Lankan army calls upon LTTE cadres in Jaffna peninsula to surrender

The Sri Lankan Army (SLA) Palaly base has issued a statement in Jaffna peninsula calling the LTTE cadres based in the army-controlled areas to surrender immediately if they want to have a better future. The army asked: “Why do you to sacrifice your life for power-hungry LTTE leadership who does not respect the sacrifices of the LTTE cadres?”

The statement said that the LTTE leadership wants to build an Eelam empire for their own benefits and that won’t help the general public at all.

The statement said that the Sri Lankan government will respect the rights of every single citizen of the country and the government will provide LTTE cadres who will surrender to SLA with better job in the country or abroad.

It was also mentioned in the statement that the identity of the LTTE cadres who will surrender will be kept secret.

For 65 years, the Singhalese governments had suppressed the Tamils and denied their due rights and privileges. All that the armed forces did was aerial bombardment, mass murdering of Tamil civilians to destroying the livelihood and properties of the Tamil population. The Tamils had suffered atrocities in the form of kidnappings, abductions, intimidation, harassments, killings, rape and forceful eviction from their homes. The Singhalese government s had all along practiced standardization policies by which they denied the rights for the Tamils.

The actions of the government or the SLA did not speak of any gestures of goodwill. Untill today, no Singhalese government had come up with a constructive proposal to address the aspirations of the Tamils. The acts for which the Sri Lankan soldiers are known for are raping Tamil women in North and East, killing the Tamil school girls (Sencholai bombing), bombing schools and hospitals, stripping bodies of people killed in the conflict displaying them nakedly in public and now sexual exploitation and abuse involving underage girls even while in their peace keeping role. These are the acts that the soldiers shamelessly indulged which fall far below any standards of human decency.

What better life can the government or the SLA give the Tamils. Can they correct the social imbalances that the Tamils had suffered for 65 years. The government canâ??t even put forward a just devolution of power package. How can any decent people expect anything good of a government or its armed forces? How can one trust such a government?
