Tamils in SLA held areas mourn the death of Thamilselvan by hoisting black flags defying SLA orders PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 05 November 2007
The people in the Sri Lankan army controlled areas are mourning the death of Brig. Thamilselvan by hoisting black flags and decorating with yellow, red and black seen in the streets of Jaffna peninsula, local sources said.

The flags are mainly seen in Valigamam, Vadamaradchy, Thenmaradchy and Theevagam (isles of Jaffna) areas.

The black flags were hoisted and garlanded photos were displayed showing respect to Thamilchelvan and five others, ignoring the presence of SLA soldiers in the areas.

On hearing the news, personnel of the Sri Lankan armed forces took them off and warn the people in the region not to put up them again.

But defying the orders, people in areas put up them again at nights, said locals.

Many people stood in lines in Jaffna to buy newspapers to read news relating to killing of six LTTE members including Brig. Thamilselvan but many people returned home without buying the newspapers as the newspapers were sold out fast.

It is worth mentioning here that the newspapers in Jaffna are printed limited number of copies due to shortage of printing materials.

Only three newspapers are published from Jaffna now and many owners are refraining from brining out their papers because of threat from Sri Lankan armed forces and paramilitary groups.

Despite intimidations from the SLA soldiers, the black flags were hoisted and garlanded photos were displayed showing respect to Thamilchelvan and five others defying the orders. Is this not a signal that the people are with the rebels.
