The target killing of S P Thamil Selvam, the political head of the Tamil Tigers, on Friday morning (November 2) was most unfortunate. Along with him five other political wing staff also perished in the Sri Lankan Air raid.

Defense secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksha (President’s brother) speaking at a ceremony in the Temple Trees - the Presidential residence, is quoted by Reuters thus:

"This is just a message, that we know where their leaders are. I know the locations of all the leaders, that if we want we can take them one by one, so they must change their hideouts."

Following the demise of Thamil Selvam, the Tamil Tiger Leader V Prabaharan has appointed another close confidante, B Nadesan as the Political head. It was announced that Mr Nadesan will continue to serve the Tamil Defacto state as its police chief while taking on another crucial responsibility on the international stage.

It must be noted that Mr Nadesan has taken part in previous international peace initiatives. He is said to be a very thoughtful and quiet man with developed skills of listening particularly to the opposite side. His wife is Sinhala who happens to be very fluent in her spoken Tamil. Nadesan is also able to converse quite well in Sinhala.

Tamils world over are deeply concerned of the hypocrisy of the Rajapaksha regime and its peace claims. When such a deceptive habit is prevalent, the Tamils are wondering whether there is any currency in a negotiated settlement. When it comes to self-determination of Tamils however, sadly the international community has taken an oscillatory stance – neither here nor there.

The Tamil Tigers announced on 24 September that, any future dialogue to be had will be based on the principle of recognising the sovereignty of the Tamil people.

Over eighty thousands lives have perished up to now in this conflict. Many more have been injured, maimed and disappeared. Now even the Tamil chief negotiator of peace has been killed.

Tragically Sri Lanka continues in its lethal folly of combating against the very peace it desperately needs.
