The hartal programme enforced by Tamil National Alliance (TNA) on Monday paralysed the Sri Lanka government held Tamil dominated Vavuniya and Mannar towns, sources from Vavuniya said. The TNA gave a call to observe hartal in protest against killing of S.P. Thamilchelvan, Political Head of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), by Sri Lanka Air Force aerial attack.
TNA MPs boycotted the parliamentary meeting on the day and some of them went to Vanni to attend the funeral of the slain leader.
Almost all the markets, shops, offices, banks and educational institutions remained closed while motorised vehicles were off the roads. Black flags were hoisted in some areas.
Many people coming to the town from villages for various purposes became stranded.
Government authorities concerned deployed additional security personnel in the vulnerable areas to avoid any untoward situation.
