The British Tamils Forum is calling upon the All Party Parliamentary Group for Tamils to strongly condemn the assassination of Brig.S.P. Tamilselvan. Representatives of the BTF met with the APPG on Monday 5th November to convey their message.
British Tamils Call for Urgent British Government Action to Stop Civilian Casualties and Displacement and Condemn the Assassination of, SP Tamilselvan the forum said. The Tamils Forum likens the killing of Tamilselvan to the Assassination Of Gerry Adams During The Northern Ireland Peace Process “Killing of this nature is not acceptable whether it is Tamil or Sinhalese. One of the objectives set by the APPG in May 2007, as articulated in the Houses of Parliament by various MPs has been to invite Mr Tamilselvan to the British Parliament to obtain information from him situation on the ground in Sri Lanka” Says BTF spokesman Suren Surendiran. “In the recent past violence in Sri Lanka has escalated to a new level. Over 5600 people have been killed since beginning of last year and many thousands of people have been displaced due to the war. Friday’s political killing of a Tamil leader Mr S.P.Thamilchelvan is strongly condemned by peace lovers within both the warring communities.” He said. “Mr Thamilchelvan has been a well recognized peace negotiator who has been one of the main contacts for the international communities in facilitating peace in Sri Lanka. This assassination has slammed the doors on peace efforts and it is most regrettable. “we now call upon our Government to condemn this action in the strongest possible terms, and we ask the APPG to use its influence to bring both factions to back to the negotiating table and honour the Cease Fire Agreement signed back in 2002” Mr Surendiran concluded.
