The former TMVP, Batticaloa, political head Thileepan had consumed cyanide in an attempt to commit suicide and was said to be in a critical condition. The political cadre, who was a close ally of Karuna Amman, attempted to take his life when cadres loyal to Pillayan stormed a political office controlled by the Karuna group on Monday and took control of the building.
The mobile phone of Thileepan kept ringing yesterday but was not answered, as the Daily Mirror attempted to reach him.But TMVP officials insisted he was alive though he could not be reached for unknown reasons. Pillayan cadres were also said to be holding at least 20 Karuna loyalists prisoner at a TMVP office in Batticaloa.
TMVP officials, however, said the situation in Batticaloa was calm yesterday and that the STF continued to provide security for the area after an attack on a group of TMVP cadres on Sunday killed one and injured seven more. Meanwhile Muslims in Ottamavadi staged a massive protest against the continuing abductions in the Batticaloa district, with stores also being closed during the protest. The SLMM has said that the abductions, allegedly by the TMVP, are still continuing in the East.
