Two journalists working for Maharaja Television Network on Thursday morning came under attack of a mob when officer in charge (OIC) of Thissemaharama Police ordered crowd to beat the journalists.
Sources said the journalists, Wasantha Pradeep Manasinghe, and his camaraman Waruna Sampath, were attacked when they were filming dead bodies of the Sinhalese cattle herders recovered in Yala sanctuary area, ignoring the OIC’s warning not to film the dead bodies and to go away from there.
In reply, the journalists argued that they were discharging their professional duties.
The working Journalists Association of Sri Lanka has condemned the incident of attack on two journalists.
Meanwhile, Thissemaharama Police on Wednesday night recovered two more dead bodies of Sinhalese cattle herders with cut injuries at Bambarawa in Yala sanctuary in southern Sri Lanka.
With these two, the number of bodies of Sinhalese cattle herders has risen to 5.
Earlier on Monday, the police recovered 3 bodies from the same location with cut injuries.
Thissemaharama division is situated in the constituency of the Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa.
