Leader of the House, and Health Minister of the United People Alliance (UPFA) government of Sri Lanka, Wimal Siripala de Silva, on Thursday morning said in the parliament that a decision to proscribe the Tamils Rehabilitation Organization (TRO) in Sri Lanka was taken by the cabinet on Wednesday, parliamentary sources said.
The minister revealed the government’s decision while responding to a question from JVP Propaganda Secretary Wimal Weerawansa in the House that whether there were any steps taken by the Government on restricting the activities of International NGOs inside Liberation Tigers controlled areas.
After the parliament session began at 9:30 a.m., Mr Weerawanse, who is also the leader of the JVP Parliamentary Group, said INGOs including those associated with the U.N., are transporting food and other materials to Liberation Tigers controlled areas, bypassing Government restrictions, and their activities are affecting the government’s efforts on the war front.
Minister Siripala de Silva, said the cabinet decision to proscribe the TRO was taken in the line of what the US government took on the November 15 to freeze funds of TRO in the U.S.
The Minister also said that Sri Lanka is closely monitoring the actiivities of other INGOs, and will take stern actions if the INGOs activities in the North East endanger Government's anti-terrorism programs there.

The bank account in Kilinochchi had TRO deposits amounting to Rs. 20 million when the order to freeze the accounts was given.
