Canada needs to play active role for a peaceful solution to the humanitarian crisis in Sri Lanka, Liberal Foreign Affairs Critic Bob Rae said on Thursday. He said the Harper government needs to express a stronger position on the need for a peaceful solution to the humanitarian crisis in the island country.
"It is clear that the ceasefire has fallen apart. It is equally clear that there is no military solution to the underlying causes of the conflict," said Mr. Rae.
He also said that Canada needs to be consistently outspoken in defence of human rights, and needs to remind the world of the loss of life and homelessness that has been the result of the conflict.
“More than 70,000 people have been killed and hundreds of thousands displaced from their homes. There is no excuse for Canada's silence and inaction”, he added.
In this regard he referred to the initiative of United Nations Human Rights Commissioner, Louise Arbour.
“She has taken a strong position, urging action and change by all parties to the conflict. Canada should be doing more to support Ms. Arbour’s recommendations,” Mr. Rae added.
