A group of unidentified men riding in a motorbike hurled petrol bombs at the house of former minister Sripathi Sooriyaarachchi, who broke away from the SLFP. The attackers hurriedly fled away after hurling petrol bombs when security guards of the residence, located at Austin Place, Borella in Colombo, opened fire at them, Police said.

Nobody, however, was injured in the attack, according to sources.

Two dissidents, Sripathi Sooriayaarachi and Mangala Samaraweera, who succeeded Kadirgamar as foreign minister, formed SLFP (M) after breaking away from SLFP.

The SLFP (M) has joined the main opposition United National Party (UNP) and has taken a strong position against the government.

Meanwhile, the SLFP dissident parliamentarian Sooriyaarachchi on Thursday held the SLFP responsible for the killing of former foreign minister Lakshman Kadirgamar.

He said that some leaders in SLFP had opposed a move to appoint Lakshman Kadirgamar as Prime Minister of Sri Lanka following a proposal in this regard was placed by the JVP.
