Wijedasa Rajapakshe, the COPE chairman who crossed over to the opposition benches from the government during the budget debate has sent a letter of demand to the editor of ‘Silumina,’ the government run Lake House newspaper claiming Rs. 500 million as damages for allegedly “insulting” him through an article.
President’s Counsel Rajapakshe, a former chairman of the Press Commission and former Managing Director of the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited (ANCL) complained that an article published in the ‘Silumina’, the Sinhala Sunday newspaper dated November 18 was defamatory of him.
Citing ANCL and Silumina Editor Karunadasa Suriyarachchi as defendants, Mr. Rajapaksa stated that he was insulted and disgraced by the article written in a low graded language.
