Sea Tigers, naval wing of the Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam (LTTE), made an attack on coastal naval and police posts in Peasalai in Mannar on Friday morning. LTTE sources said six gunboats of Sea Tigers around 7:50 a.m. approached Peasalai in Mannar and opened fire on coastal posts of Sri Lankan Navy (SLN) and police.
The SLN from Peasalai and Vangkaalaippaadu also retaliated, triggering a clash with the Sea Tigers 2 km off Peasalai that lasted for half an hour.
Later, the clash later shifted to Thalai Mannar and continued for more than 3 hours in the seas off Thalai Mannar.
Local sources said the clash left some houses on the Peasalai coast damaged and a good number of civilians sought refuge at Our Lady of Victory Church and St. Mary's school.
During the clash, movement of vehicles to and from Thalai Mannar via Peasaalai on A14 road was suspended.
