Sri Lanka: Sri Lanka disrupts Maveerar commemoration with aerial bombing and claymores - seven civilians killed

Sri Lanka Air Force bombed a civilian settlement in Tharmapuram in the Kilinochchi district today, Sunday 25 November, at 7.30am killing four people and injuring five. Also this morning two claymore attacks were carried out by the SLA in which a total of three civilians were killed.

The names of the victims are provided at the end of this report.

The civilian settlement, Unit 8 in Tharmapuram came under the SLAF aerial bombing. The four people killed in this bombing are all from the same family. The five injured civilians are receiving treatment at the Kilinochchi district hospital.

At 8.45am a claymore attack by the SLA in the Oddusuddan area killed two civilians.

Another claymore attack at 11.45am in the Mudkomban area killed one civilian.

These attacks aimed deliberately to disrupt the Tamils in the Tamil homeland starting the three days of commemoration of Maveerar have no genuine military goal behind it. Rather these attacks are along a well established pattern of Sri Lanka, to destroy Maveerar cemeteries and symbols and disrupt Maveerar commemorations.

The names of the civilians, all from one family, killed in the aerial bombing in Tharmapuram are:

  1. Murugaih Subashini, female aged 16
  2. Varmakulasingam Sumirthananthini, female aged 26
  3. Varmakulasingam Sarasvathi, female aged 50
  4. Arumugam Varmakulasingam, male aged 55

The names of those killed in the Oddusuddan claymore attack are:

  1. Sathanantharasa Sritharan, male aged 17
  2. Thamba, male

The name of the civilian killed in the Mudkomban claymore attack is:

  1. Thavaseelan, male aged 28

Names of those injured in the Tharmapuram aerial bombing are:

  1. Kamalraj Thavayogan, male aged 18, (she lost her leg)
  2. Varmakulasingam Kamalraj, male aged 29.
  3. Murukesu Nadanavathi, female aged 40 (Deputy-principal of Tharmapuram-school)
  4. Thuraisingam Lingeswaran, male aged 41
  5. Ariyakuddi Velmuruhu, male aged 60 (Assistant postmaster)
