The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) recently called on Louise Arbour and other international organisations that speak of human rights violations to immediately establish an observation post in Iraq and in the US to monitor Human Rights violations, while urging the Sri Lankan Government to expose the double nature of foreign funded NGOs.

JVP Leader Somawansa Amarasinghe addressing a seminar on Friday said, “In any war, there are bound to be some human rights violations and collateral damage. It is to the credit of Sri Lanka’s troops that they have kept such violations to a minimum. By no means is Sri Lanka anywhere near the widespread human rights violations committed by Western powers in Iraq.”

Speaking further, Amarasinghe said that the Sri Lankan armed forces were quite disciplined in comparison to the behaviour of the US armed forces. “During the Budget debate we criticised the corruption, waste and mismanagement of the government. However, while criticising corruption, we fully back the efforts of the armed forces.” Amarasinghe also said, “The old colonial position is now being taken up by selective interventions by the Western powers. They are supported by the local NGO mudalalis created by Western funds.”
