Three days of official remembrance events for the nearly 20, 000 Tamil men and women who died fighting the Sri Lankan armed forces commenced in the Tamil Homeland on Sunday. Flag raising ceremonies took place at 8.30am, followed by garlanding of fallen heroes at 9am.
At the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) Political Head Office, the newly appointed Political Head Mr. P. Nadesan raised the Tamileelam flag. Following two minutes of silence, Pon Thiyagam, Head of Heroes' Welfare Centre, lit the flame of sacrifice.
Mr. Nadesan went on to garland a photo of Lieutenant Shankar, the first LTTE carder to have been killed by Sri Lankan forces on 27 November 1982. Members of the LTTE and the public then went on to pay their respect to the fallen heroes.
Similar events took place across the Tamil Homeland.
