Over 1500 army deserters have returned to service taking the opportunity of the two-week amnesty period offered by the Sri Lanka Army, Lankan defence officials said on Sunday, the last day of the period that began on November 12. "The deserters who do not have any criminal record were offered amnesty and given time between November 12 and 25 to re-join service," Defence spokesman, Udaya Nanayakkara, said.
He said the personnel who deserted Army on or before November 01, 2004 were allowed to report to duty within this two-week period.
Earlier the Army announced that the deserters will not be punished and will be posted in the ranks they held when they deserted.
The offer was extended to those who had left the army during the training period.
The spokesman said over 1,500 army deserters have already joined duty and the number of such personnel could cross 1,600 before the end of the deadline.
