The Sri Lankan Army (SLA) has created the 59th division with three brigades to fight against the Tamil Tigers in the North and East of Sri Lanka. The 59th division is the third division added to the army within the last two years.

Brigadier Nandana Udawatta (Armored Corp) has been appointed the general officer command in the new division.

Brigadier W.B.Jayasinghe will be the second in command of the new division that was inaugurated in the Manalaaru battleground last week.
