Speaker of Sri Lankan Parliament, W.J.M. Lokubandara, in Parliament on Wednesday postponed a special statement of the TNA amidst protest by JVP and Government that notice of the statement was not given and some sections of it were unconstitutional.

TNA General Secretary, Mavai Senadirajah, started making a special statement in the parliament in the absence of party Lleader R. Sampanthan, but rising on a point of order JVP Parliamentary group leader, Wimal Weerawansa, protested against the TNA statement.

He said the statement supported Tamil Tigers and separation that went against the Constitution although every MP is oath-bound to uphold constitution.

He said this was against the Standing Orders in Parliament, and urged the Speaker to prevent Mr. Senadirajah from making his statement.

Leader of the House Nimal Siripala de Silva and Chief Government Whip Jeyaraj Fernandopulle also said that any statement contrary to the Constitution of the country should not be allowed in Parliament.

“The TNA is all the time use the Parliament to speak in support of the LTTE and take its message to the international community. There is constant talk about a separate state for Tamils. We have no problem if the talking was about the problems of the Tamils but we are against talking in support of the LTTE,” said Mr. Fernandopulle.

Minister De Silva said that the Government must be notified a day before opposition parties make statements in the House, but this notice was given only in the morning.
