VAVUNIYA (SNM) -- The Colombo to Vavuniya train service, the only one operating to the Tamil town was curtailed on Thursday on the orders of the Ministry of Defence, railway officers say. The Yal Devi line, which once operated from Colombo to Jaffna, will only be operating from Colombo to the northern most predominantly Sinhalese town on Medawachchiya until further notice.
Vavuniya station remained closed. Tamils in Vavuniya have been ordered to stay within the town by the Sri Lankan forces who have declared unofficial martial law here.
No one is allowed in or out of the Tamil town of more than 100 000 people.
