Sri Lanka: MOD's video release "out of taste" - diplomat

COLOMBO (SNM) -- Sri Lankan Ministry of Defence's (MOD's) decision to publish CCTV footage showing a bomber killing herself and a gunmen of the EPDP paramilitary group is "out of taste" a senior official attached to a western diplomatic mission here said. The footage, which was apparently authorised by the defence hierarchy for public release has shocked and outraged much of the diplomatic community. The senior official who spoke to us said: !The video claims to be first ever recorded suicide bombing. In fact that is not strictly true. It is the first one to have been released to the public. Basically the Sri Lankan MOD is the first and perhaps the only one in the world that would release such a video to the public".

The official went onto comment: "Perhaps only Sri Lankans would watch such a video in the name of news over a cup of tea." He asked not be identified as that would hamper relations between his country and Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka's MOD defended the release of the video as "crucial" in its "campaign against terrorism".

The only other organisation to have ever released videos of people being killed is Al-Qaeda. Sri Lanka has followed on a close second.

omg - there is a bomb, lets video tape it, instead of running or saving the people, so we can blame LTTE and beg for more money from International. Sinhalams keep proving that they are modayans.

Unfortunate to say it should not be shown perhaps because it was not captured by a western photographer. What is wrong showing the brutality of real terrorist acts to the world to condemn these acts? We always get it wrong, please condemn the terror instead of condemning mere showing it. We must understand and not to say, it is ok to happen them in other parts of the world because that attitude has brought the terror to all parts of the world. Some diplomats, politicians and INGOs seem deliberately missing the point and drag these activities for hidden agendas of interested outside parties. More bombs, more guns, more commerce for those who made them. Sri Lanka does not make any of those except buying from outside to fight the menace of terror last three decades.
