The group in UNP, known as democratic group, claimed that it has started a process of negotiation with some senior leaders of the party to remove Ranil Wickremesinghe from the party leadership as well as the post of leader of the opposition. Sports and Public Entertainment Minister, Gamini Lokuge, said the prevailing situation in Sri Lanka is going from bad to worse and a national government should be formed to save the country from this crisis.
But UNP General Secretary, Tissa Attanayaka MP said that he is not aware of any such dialogue.
“There was a possibility of forming such government and the UNP and the SLFP worked together in this regard in 2006. The two parties even signed an agreement. But President Mahinda Rajapakse rescinded that agreement marring the possibility of national government. Now the government is interested to form such government for its own survival. We have no interest now to save this government”, he added.
