A Sri Lankan Minister gets on average SLR 300,000 per month in fuel allowances. The figure is an average of totals including allowances for the two back -up vehicles provided to Cabinet Ministers, one such vehicle provided to deputy Ministers, and the varying allowances for Western Province residents and outsiders. There are a total of 110 Ministers in Sri Lankan parliament. At SLR 300,000 per head, the total Ministerial fuel allowance per month is SLR 33,000,000. Over the course of a year, the grand total sums up to SLR 396,000,000 or US$ 3,600,000.

The total does not include the fuel allowances for the Rajapaksa brothers and their mammoth security entourages. An average Sri Lankan's annual salary is US$1300. It takes the full earnings of 2770 Sri Lankans, just to pay for the fuel used by the country's Ministers.
